UK Trading Resources – Global Trade
In previous learning about trade, UK Trading Resources has explored the concept of import and export from a manufacturing perspective. Today, they will examine global trade from a different perspective by exploring what the UK exports to other countries around the world. This will help them to understand the links between the UK and the 225 countries and territories to which it exports goods and services. This link :
Pupils begin the lesson by revisiting the definition of import and export, using the PPT, UK Exports Table handout (see downloadable resources) and their own knowledge to complete a table ordering the top ten products that the UK exports to. They then use this information to create a bar chart, either on graph paper or with a computer software programme such as Excel / 2Simple2Graph. They should be sure to label their axis clearly and write a clear title for their chart.
Essential Trading Tools and Resources in the UK
After this, pupils explore the UK’s top trading partners. They will find out what percentage of total UK exports each country makes up and why these are the countries to which the UK exports most. They will also consider what products the UK is most likely to import from each of these countries.
This will be followed by a debate about the benefits of trade and how it impacts upon people’s lives. To conclude, they will look at the importance of rules and regulations that govern trading between nations. These rules are designed to protect consumer rights, encourage fair business practices and safeguard personal data. They are also a vital part of ensuring high standards in both the goods that are manufactured and those that are imported to the UK.
